With a quick explosion in popularity, these colorful stainless steel and insulated reusable drink carriers have made quite the impact on consumers. Not only has the recent thirst for these cups caused an economic wave, but a cultural one as well. Such a craze that caused one incident of 65 stolen stanley cups by an individual and endless lines in Target for limited edition Stanleys. There’s much more to just a water bottle for Stanley cups however.
As for Godwin High School, the Stanley Cup surge has taken effect from classroom to classroom with at least one student or even teacher drinking from a Stanley in all of the many available colors. In the last year, the Stanley cup has skyrocketed in the US. The cup alone has been pushing a trend all over the internet, especially on Tik Tok.
While the trend is recent, the brand has some longevity behind it. The Stanley company was established way before the debut of cups and bottles in 1913. Stanley at the time specialized in camping gear and other miscellaneous items. Furthermore, not much of society had known Stanely has been around for over a century.
Godwin’s staff and students’ opinions on Stanley’s however may give you more insight on why this trend became popular now. Especially now, the holidays have passed and most students and staff interviewed had received their Stanley as a gift. GHS JV girl’s basketball coach, Rachael Walker, describes all 7 of her gifted Stanley cups, better than the Hydro Flask. “It fits in a car cup holder, easy to carry around, holds a lot of water, and can go in the dishwasher!” Walker said. Walker also mentions the viral car fire incident when an inferno destroyed everything in the famous woman’s car, except for the ice in her Stanley. From hearing all these pluses, people would love to get a Stanley, but what happened to all the other water bottles out there on the market?
Surely they’re other brands on the market such as Yeti, Hydroflask, Nalgene, ThermoFlask, Owala and so much more. GHS student ,Elise Emory (10), on the other hand has one stanley that was also gifted to her but believes Hydroflask are better than Stanleys. “It’s like the same as HydroFlask, I actually like HydroFlask better, ” Emory said. Godwin teacher Dana Delano is neutral with her preference for the different water bottles and states, “No, they’re just as good as them!”. In addition, each of these water bottles had their time when they were on top and popular at the time. Who knows if the vast popularity of Stanley cups would surpass the durations of the other trends that have happened in the past.
After all the dilemma of water bottles, from consumer’s perspective, it’s just a water bottle. Yes they have their slight differences, but they still do what they’re supposed to. Colors and cuteness definitely make a difference in speaking trends as well as social media. For now though, Stanleys are here to stay.
