Old map, new game, same feeling

For a month, players readied up for the limited-time Fortnite OG.

In this latest season, players from the good old days dusted off their controllers and keyboards for another round of classic Fortnite fun.

The launch of Fortnite OG sparked a remarkable surge in player numbers, regaining the interest of those who once played in the game’s earlier years. According to The Verge, approximately 30 million users hopped back into the game.

The revival of the original map not only breathed new life into the game but has also successfully brought back players who played the game years ago, but have since dropped off the map with the launch of Chapter 2.

The new season brought back the return of the OG map, and old loot items came with it. Many weapons from the later seasons returned like the heavy assault rifle and the hand cannon.

Alongside the new drop of the ever-popular OG map, rapper Eminem performed at the Fortnite live event on Dec 2, albeit to mixed reviews. Marshall Mathers isn’t the first artist to perform in Fortnite; he’s just one of many.

Back in 2020, Travis Scott hosted a live performance in Fortnite which over 12 million people attended. The most recent live event has had a lot of backlash compared to the other events. People were unhappy that they were hit with massive queues when they logged on, with some players waiting nearly 2 hours.

Even though so many people were upset with the live event there was one thing that really caught people’s attention. During the event, Fortnite gave a sample of their Lego collab.

Epic Games made 3 different skins available to purchase that are modeled after the rapper.

The OG map left just as fast as it dropped. This season’s live event, ‘The Big Bang’, took place December 2 which was the end of the OG map and the same day Eminem performed to millions.  Many players are upset about the OG map leaving “Yes I’m upset about the map. That map had so many memories and was by far the best map with the best guns” says  Godwin freshman Khadija Badalova.

Everybody seems to have mixed feelings about the new Fortnite. Some people are upset and some people really enjoy it. It seems like what people hate the most is the new movement mechanics. The game’s new movement is much slower and sprinting is incredibly short and slow.

This is a new beginning for Fortnite, many things are different and new. I believe it will take some time to warm up but it might not be as bad as some worry.
