On May 16 and 17, senior Kelly Price competed in a national gymnastics event in Fort Myers, Fla. Price represented the Virginia National Gymnastics Team, comprised of student athletes from all over the state.
Price, who has been a gymnast since the age of four and has been on Godwin’s gymnastics team since her freshman year, prepared for the event by attending club practices after the end of her normal season.
In the competition, gymnasts are judged primarily on their ability to make a difficult skill look easy. “It’s important to be able to do hard routines but still make it look pretty and graceful,” said Price.
The competition was attended by more than one hundred student athletes from across the country, and was held in the Estero Community Center, in Fort Myers.
Unfortunately, Price reported her performance at the event to have been less than satisfactory. “I fell on beam, which is my best event, and ended up missing event finals by less than a tenth.
Price plans to attend James Madison University this coming fall, and may continue club gymnastics there, but does not plan to continue gymnastics beyond that.
“Kelly was a joy to have on the Virginia National Gymnastics Team. She brought a lot of energy to the team and used her leadership skills to encourage others to stay confident and have fun.” said the team’s coach, Austin Beazley from Patrick Henry High School.
“She is a strong competitor and executed beautiful skills on the balance beam and floor exercise,” said Beazley
