Influential Women

Brooke West

Ruth Bader Ginsberg (a.k.a. RBG)– Was the second female Supreme Court Justice in 1993.  In the 70’s she served as the director of the Women’s Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union. Throughout her time on the supreme court, RBG fought for gender equality, workers rights, and the separation of church and state.

Emmeline Pankhurst- Known for organizing the UK Suffragette Movement in 1880 and helping women win the right to vote through many protests.

Frida Kahlo– One of the most popular female artists of all time.  Kahlo depicted Mexican culture through surrealist self portraits and helped to inspire young women internationally to pursue art.  

Maya Angelou-A dancer, singer, activist, and scholar, she was most notably an author and poet. With many works which included “When the Caged Bird Sings. She was one of the most influential young writers during the Civil Rights Movement. 

Sojourner truth– She was an African-American abolitionist and women’s rights activist. After she escaped slavery, she travelled the country speaking out against inequalities of black women. Her most notable speech was “Ain’t I a Woman?”

Marie Curie– She was a famous Chemist and Physicist. In her lifetime, she won two Nobel Peace Prizes for discovering radioactivity and isolating pure radium. Her discoveries lead to many advancements in the medical world and discovery of the neutron.

Ada Lovelace– She was a pioneer of computing science. She developed the first computer program in the 19th century.

Billie Jean King– She was an American tennis player and gender equality advocate. During her time as a professional athlete, she participated in the Battle of the Sexes against Bobby Riggs to fight for equal representation and pay in the world of women’s tennis.

Marsha P Johnson– She was a transgender women who was an American gay liberation activist. She started the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) with Sylvia Rivera which was a trans rights group which also helped the LGBTQ homeless youth.
