In a game that saw both teams struggle on offense, the Mills Godwin football team fell in disappointing fashion at home to Monacan Friday night. Although never consistent, Monacan put together enough big plays to pull out a 20-14 win over the Eagles.
The Godwin Eagles compiled of 150 yards of offense while the Monacan Chiefs edged out 225 yards. Godwin had a total of 16 passing yards.
The Eagles’ offense struggled throughout the game. At the half, the Eagles had three first downs and 40 yards of offense, 39 of which were rushing yards.
The Chiefs also had difficulties moving the ball down field with four first downs at the half. They also had zero points and turned the ball over on an interception.
In the first quarter the Eagles managed to drive the ball down to the Monacan 18 yard line, but turned the ball over on downs at the Monacan 33. The Chiefs went quickly all the way back to their own 13 yard line due to penalties, and Godwin senior AB Rhodes intercepted the ball at the Monacan 22 yard line.
The second half started with Monacan kicking off to Godwin. Godwin junior Ricky Lewis received the kick and returned it for a 97 yard touchdown to start of the second half. “I had really good blocking, and I wouldn’t have scored without them,” said Lewis. Godwin senior Chris Ray kicked in the extra point to make the game 7-0.
After Monacan went three-and-out on their first series of the second half, Monacan senior Malik Ashford was benched in favor of senior Anthony Carson at the quarterback position.
Unable to score, the Eagles lined up to punt. The snap was high and the ball was fumbled. Monacan junior Kevin Granger picked up the fumble at the Godwin 33 yard line and returned it for a touchdown.
The Chiefs went for two, but were unsuccessful. The Chiefs’ kickoff was deep which resulted in a touchback.
Godwin started to rotate their quarterbacks as both senior Delton Dunkum and freshman Preston Hutchison switched off running the offense.
Later in the game, the Chiefs started at their own 42 yard line and scored a touchdown on seven plays in the third quarter. It was the first offensive touchdown scored by either team. Carson completed a 40 yard touchdown pass to Granger on fourth and three. The Chiefs went for two and got it which made the game 14-7.
The Chiefs kicked the ball off to Lewis who fooled Monacan twice and returned the kickoff for a 95 yard touchdown. Lewis was named a Top Performer by the Richmond Times Dispatch for his 192 yards and two touchdowns returning kicks. “I just wanted the ball,” Lewis said. Ray added the extra point to make the game 14 all.
With under a minute left in the third quarter, Monacan was inside their own five yard line. Carson stepped back to pass and barely avoided heavy pressure which would have been a safety for the Eagles.
In the fourth quarter the Eagles came up just short on fourth and two at the Monacan 44 and turned the ball over on downs. Monacan then completed a twelve yard pass which placed them on the Godwin 44. The next play, Monacan senior Trey Pope ran for 42 yards, but the touchdown was saved by Godwin senior Garrett Lemelin.
At the Godwin two yard line, Monacan senior JP Redman scored the touchdown with 7:36 left in the game. Monacan’s extra point attempt was partially blocked by the Eagles and was no good.
Monacan kicked off short to avoided Lewis. Godwin junior Gabriel Irigaray returned it 13 yards to the Godwin 30 yard line. Dunkum played quarterback this series.
Dunkum, Lemelin, and sophomore D.J. Anderson lead one final attempt to score with a five minute drive. The Eagles were unable to get a first down and turned the ball over on downs at the Monacan 21 yard line.
Monacan ate about two minutes of clock as Hutchinson and the Eagles got the ball back at the Godwin 41 yard line with 22 seconds left in the game and no timeouts. Godwin was unable to score and the game ended. The final score was 20-14 Monacan. Godwin head coach John Phillips said, “they don’t always go as you envision it.” They play at Lee-Davis this Friday at 7:00PM. “We are going to feed off that tough loss, so we’re hungry for a win,” Lewis said.
Nice job, Andre. Do you know when we’ll have the stats and writeups for the Lee-Davis and Glen Allen games? These are great to send to relatives who are not able to attend the games.
Hello Ms. Carroll
The Eagles’ Eyrie will not be covering all games. Our goal is to cover games from all our varsity sports which limits us from covering all football games. As of now, we will only be covering a few key home games this season . However, we do plan to cover all teams and hopefully all games in the playoffs. If you would like statistics from games we do not cover, we suggest contacting the coaching staff who will be more than happy to help you. Thank you for showing your interest in the Eagles’ Eyrie.
