With the golf season underway, Godwin will be aiming to repeat last year’s success and win back-to-back state championships. Seniors Brian Hill and Curt Kennedy and juniors Mark Lawrence and Colton Grow return from last year’s state championship team while Tyler Bennett and Wes Pike graduated.
The team has had an excellent start to the season. Godwin has finished 2nd once and 1st four times. In August, they won the VSGA High School Invitational, a prestigious golf tourney played at Independence Golf Club. “The tournament is our most competitive event of the season”, said Hill. The team set a school record by shooting a team score of 288 and even par for 4 players in the final round.
Lawrence guided Godwin to a victory at the Mini-District tournament by shooting a 60 at The Hollows, an 18 hole golf course, setting a new course record. Lawrence also broke the nine-hole record by shooting 27. The team also broke a school record with a 4 score total of 292 on a par 72 golf course at the Hollows.
For pre game traditions, the team does not do anything unusual. “As far as traditions we don’t really have any aside from going to Chick-Fil-A before matches and practice…you could say it’s pretty laid back” said Hill. “We don’t do anything unusual, we just play a lot of golf,” said head coach Thomas Hoy.
The team has key upcoming matches against rival Deep Run and Matoaca. “We have played consistent and solid so far this year and we are working hard to prepare for the post-season,” said Lawrence. “Winning these two matches will give us momentum heading into the Conference Tournament,” said Hill.
