Prince William plans to take away Meghan Markle and Prince Harry of their HRH titles once he becomes king. He is concerned that Meghan has violated her agreement with Queen Elizabeth II.
HRH titles stand for His and Her Royal Highness. When you are given these honorable titles, you are expected to carry a level of responsibility and prestige with them. Recently, Meghan has shown the opposite when using her title.
When Megan and Harry left their royal duties back in 2020, they signed an agreement called the Sandringham Summit. This agreement settled the concerns of using their HRH titles for promotional efforts.
After their move in early 2020, Meghan and Harry were able to keep their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles along with the HRH titles. They promised the queen that they wouldn’t associate their HRH titles with any publicity or refer to themselves with their HRH titles.
This was because they no longer were associated with the royal family or represented the British government. For a while, this was not an issue for them; they’ve been working on creating a life of their own away from Britain.
That was until April 2025, when she received a gift from a senior Ukrainian official, with a letter that addressed her with her HRH title. She continued to post it on her Instagram story with the HRH title, clearly allowing anyone who saw it to read it.
Meghan claims that she is not in the wrong because she didn’t technically address herself with the title. Which he reported as not commercial use because when it was sent, he didn’t mean for it to be broadcast online like it was.
Before this event, Prince William had already had other concerns about Meghan using her HRH title for branding to gain a bigger audience when promoting her brand. Another issue with addressing Meghan with her HRH title was seen on a podcast.
Meghan sent her a gift basket of her brand, which consisted of homemade strawberry sauce with a card saying, “With the Compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex.” Later, this gift basket made an appearance on Kern Lima’s podcast.
If this does become a violation of the agreement, King Charles will most likely not take action on the situation. Many say he feels reluctant to do anything about it because he doesn’t want to upset his son and daughter-in-law in the process.
People Magazine reported that many friends of William find Charles weak because he would never betray his son like that. They believe that William is a better person for the position of the king, and once he is granted the position of the king, he will settle this situation.
