The Godwin boys’ volleyball team suffered a loss to district rival Freeman on Tuesday night. The first set started off favoring the Eagles.

Freshman Connor Hicks had some strong serves, which helped Godwin gain momentum. However, the Rebels quickly responded and tied the set at 4-4. The rest of the first set was an evenly matched battle. It featured four spikes and four blocks by sophomore middle blocker Spencer West.

When the score was tied 14-14, there was an intense rally with many impressive saves by senior Chas Carroll. The rally ended in favor of Godwin when senior outside hitter Thomas Wood spiked the ball down.

Although the Eagles fought hard, they could not best their opponents in the first set. They lost the set 22-25.

The Freeman Rebels came out on fire in set number two, and Godwin struggled to slow down the productive Rebel team.

The end result of the second set was a Freeman victory as they defeated the Eagles 25-12.

In the third set, the Eagles hoped to turn the match around and make a come back. They came out ready to play, with two kills by West. Godwin’s strong play in the third set did not hold up though, as the Rebels came back and began to pull away.

The third set ended with another victory by Freeman. They finished off the Eagles with a score of 25-14.

“We didn’t play our best tonight because of our terrible passing and our lack of intensity,” said Godwin sophomore, Luke Farina.

The Godwin varsity team will hope to pull out a victory in their final match on the October 30 vs. John Marshall.

When asked about turning it around for the next match and then for districts, Godwin Coach Whitney Di Frischia said, “We hope to improve after our final game going into districts.” She added, “We just got back our middle blocker from injury, and he should make a difference going into districts.”

“I believe we can make a run in the district championship. In districts, anything can happen,” said sophomore Spencer West.
