Warner Bros. Discovery Evolves: Sale or Split?

Warner Bros. Discovery has announced its plan to split into two separate companies by mid-2026. However, there has been some notice that they are considering a sale of the company. The company plans to split into two new companies named Warner Bros. and Discovery Global.

Warner Bros. will be responsible for streaming and studio services. It will comprise Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO and HBO Max, Warner Bros. Games, Tours, and Retail and Experiences.

On the other hand, the new Global Networks goal is to develop a global profile of new television networks, entertainment, and sports. Its main focus will be to expand the already massive network into an even bigger financial profile.

Warner Bros. Discovery is already a worldwide leader in the live television market. This split will allow the company to pursue huge financial opportunities and have a strict focus on just international growth.

On June 9, 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery announced its plans to separate the company in a tax-free way. The main goal of this split was to allow every company to maximize its potential.

The splitting up of the company was due to continuing financial pressure from various large companies, such as AT&T. Another reason that David Zaslav, the current CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, decided to follow through with the division of the company was because of the quickly changing landscape of the media.

Trying to guide a large company like this through a constantly changing media market is very important. The separation of the company would allow each part to maintain control over plans and increased flexibility within the new company.

Following the separation, David Zaslav will continue to be President and Ceo of Warner Bros. Streaming & Studios. Gunner Wiedenfels, currently CFO of Warner Bros. Discovery, will take the lead as Global Networks President and CEO.

While the split is expected to be completed by mid-2026, they are currently exploring and evaluating a potential sale or other offers that they have been given. It is possible that these sales could take the place of the split.

Though most of the sale offers given to Warner Bros. Discovery are for the whole company, some companies are offering only part of the company. These partial sales would be for the Global Networks part of the split.

If they were to go through with one of the sales for part of the company, Global Networks would no longer be associated with the Warner Bros. company. Although it is not expected that Warner Bros. will finalize a sale of the company, they will continue to prepare for the split of the company while they decide.
