Spring sports are on the horizon for Godwin Eagles athletics, and along with any new season, there are many changes for each team. These changes involve players leaving and new players coming in along with various other things coaches and athletes need to account for and adjust to before the season starts.
Varsity Boys Baseball is coming off a red-hot playoff run ending in a state championship appearance finishing the season 8-3 in divisional play and 19-7 in overall play.
However, after losing fifteen seniors, there are many unknowns going into the 2025 season. Godwin fans wonder if they will be capable of following up on last season’s phenomenal performance with the same amount of success. There’s no doubt it’s possible for the team to continue dominating when you have returning talent including seniors Hudson Williams, Luke Smyers, Hayden Bynum, and more, but only time will tell if the pieces fall into place for Godwin Baseball’s 2025 season.
Nothing introduces spring better than the sound of a tennis ball getting hit back and forth, and for the Varsity Girls Tennis team, spring means it’s time to lock in.
After a record of 4-12 last year, junior tennis player Ally Hopkins said, “I feel like we’ll do better [this season] because people are willing to try harder this year.”
When asked what her goals for the team this season are, Hopkins said, “I really hope we can make it to regionals this year as a team. With strong hopes for the upcoming season, the girls hope to improve drastically in comparison to last season.
Since last spring, Varsity Boys Lacrosse had six senior starters graduate which included key players (all 2024 Godwin Alumni) such as Jed Johnson, the anchor of the defense, starting goalie Drew Holden, faceoff specialist Tucker Washburn, and offensive captain Tim Hedrick.
Because of these graduates, six out of the team’s ten starting spots from last year are empty which leaves a question on how the upcoming season’s team will fill these gaps. “We’ve got some bright sides that we are looking forward to this year. A lot of players have developed and gotten bigger,” says senior lacrosse player Brody Milne when asked what he thinks will improve this season compared to the last.
“We’ll see some new talent on the team; it’s going to look a lot different,” says Milne when asked what the team might look like this season. To say the least, there is a lot of room for refinement for this young roster in an attempt at improving last year’s 4-11 season.
Spring track athletes have been preparing for the season by doing indoor track over the winter, tweaking the small things that make a big difference. There’s no better way to work on your skills than an absurd amount of work and repetition, and that’s exactly what senior track runner Iesa Abdul-Qudoos helps the team do.
“My charismatic personality [is my greatest strength], I am pretty good at building an environment for people around me to be their best selves. I can push my friends to work harder and in return, they push me to be a better person,” said Abdul-Qudoos when asked what his greatest strength in helping his team succeed is.
Abdul-Qudoos placed second in the four by four race at the regional finals but is not satisfied and looks to improve even more. “This year I need to achieve even more, I want to place first at states in the four by four race and set the school record,” said Abdul-Qudoos.
With high hopes and a motivating attitude, Godwin is in store for some exciting track and field action this year.
It’s undeniable that the Varsity Softball team was dominant last season finishing 10-1 in regional play, 1st overall in the colonial division, and a staggering 18-3 overall record at the end of regular season play.
“We had a strong start to our season but ended sooner than expected. I think this season I expect us to learn from our mistakes last season and last longer in the playoffs,” said junior Bella Ross when asked to describe last season and how they can improve on it this year. “My expectations for the team is to play well together and as a team,” says Ross after being asked what her expectations are for this season.
Ross and the softball team seem to have high hopes for this season and expect to continue playing high caliber ball this season just the same as last year.
As spring nears, the anticipation of this season for sports is growing in Godwin students, athletes, and fans, as they are all eager for the unforgettable season that is to come.
