Godwin Eagles Prepare to Ruffle Feathers

With the 2024 season underway, Godwin students are curious about the expectations of the Godwin football team this season. They are coming off a great 23-24 season with a 7-5 record and getting the first playoff win in several years. Godwin looks to carry the momentum into this next season, led by junior quarterback Sam Settar. Godwin is off to a great start with wins over Goochland and Patrick Henry starting the season off 2-0 and with hard-fought loss to Atlee.

The Colonial region has historically been full of tough opponents with strong defenses, so the key to winning divisional matchups is to keep teams contained and prevent big break plays while forcing teams into uncomfortable third and long situations. On the offensive side, the Eagles need to play patiently, by settling for short gains and methodical long drives to put points on the board. This play style will make less disciplined defenses impatient and will make mistakes leading to big plays.

However, Godwin’s schedule this year isn’t a cakewalk; they play several tough games, especially at the end of the season. Godwin ends the season playing at Freeman (10/25), vs. Deep Run (11/1), and at Glen Allen (11/8) consecutively. Yet, this tough final stretch could be what the team needs to get into playoff form before the postseason run.

With a surprisingly good rush game led by the offensive line, Godwin can establish the line of scrimmage and pick up easy yardage, making it easier for Godwin to have short third-down situations and force defenses to respect the play action. Creating more time for Settar in the pocket. The foundation of a good offense is a solid run game, and that’s exactly what our Eagles have this year.

Going around the school, students can feel the energy and excitement coming from how good the Eagles have looked so far. On game days, school spirit levels are off the charts, and home game student sections are packed every time. Even away games have a solid base of support at the games. Every year there is anticipation before the season, but this year seems different. This year hopes are high, and Godwin’s football team could go all the way.
