That time of year is approaching once more. The jolly traditions of Christmas are drawing near, meaning 2024 is just around the corner.
As the annual New Year’s tradition goes, pages and pages are filled with hopeful achievements for the upcoming year, only to be shoved down the garbage can two weeks into the new year.
According to the National Library of Medicine, over 43% of people failed to stick with their resolutions.
Why is that?
Time and time again, no one can break through the barrier of following through with their personal goals. The reason behind this recurring occurrence is simple. People ask for too much from themselves.
The majority of the population in 2023 already has bucketloads full of stress. Adding all of these ambitious aspirations is just a formula leading to disaster.
How can this issue be changed?
Set milestones can help come a long way when it comes to achieving goals. Setting milestones sets smaller, more manageable goals that are more likely to achieve the result.
In addition, having smaller goals makes it easier to track progress. Looking back and watching that progress meter increase over time will show that the strenuous work was worth it. A reward system goes well with progress. For every milestone hit, a gradually increasing reward is given.
It’s helpful for a variety of reasons but mainly to increase motivation, which can help the resolutions come a long way.
It will be tough to incorporate these new goals into daily life. That’s why it’s vital to plan and create habits. It’ll be easier to advance when it’s part of a continuous routine. Once constantly repeated, it will become the new norm of everyday life.
Of course, repeating the same routine every day will quickly get boring, so have fun with it. Don’t be afraid to switch things up now and then. Take working out as an example. So many people are nervous about going to the gym, but if not now, when? If nervousness is a factor, go to the gym with a friend! It’ll take so much pressure off and can get a few laughs between sets.
And even if the New Year’s resolutions fail throughout the year, don’t be afraid to pick it back up when possible. Every human being needs a break. It is a non-negotiable necessity. Society wouldn’t function properly if everyone was working hard 24/7.
So don’t take these new resolutions incredibly seriously. Have fun with it! That’s the main point of the festive spirit of the holiday season. May 2024 be your year.
