The Powder Puff football games have been a staple at Godwin for many years now, as a tradition that takes place as a part of the Homecoming festivities.
The traditional roles of football are reversed with the girls playing and the boys on the sidelines cheering.
The Powder Puff game occurred on Oct. 3, pitting the freshman against the sophomores while the juniors played against the seniors. We asked some of our eagles what motivated them to take part in the game this year.
Godwin Senior, Ally McKinney, said, “It’s my senior year and I really wanted to participate in the game and be a part of something that people love.”
In order to prepare for the game, both teams held practices in the weeks leading up to the game. Godwin Senior, Kaleigh McPhail, said, “you are required to go to at least 2 [practices], but I, and many others, ended up going to way more just because of how fun it is!”
As for the underclassmen game, the freshmen are coming in with a thundering passion. Godwin freshman, Stephanie Geisel, stated, “Here comes the boom,” when asked how she thinks the freshmen will match up against the sophomores. They are all very confident that this could very well be the first-ever time the freshmen win.
On top of all that determination, they are just as ready to win the fashion game as well. Freshman, Sophie Gavin, said, “The whole team has made jerseys for the game,” in order to create chemistry and unification within the Freshmen squad.
We asked the girls which teams they thought they would win, and they were all very optimistic of themselves and their teams.
McKinney said, “Of course, the seniors will walk away winning…the senior girls have great sportsmanship and support towards each other which just makes our team stronger.”
Gavin said, “I think that the freshman will take the win and walk away with the first ever freshman victory.”
Unfortunately for McKinney and Gavin, they should not go to the casino anytime soon, as their predictions were both proven wrong. The Juniors and the Sophomores both walked away with the victories against their respective opponents.
In the end, every player came off the field with an uplifting smile on their face, no matter if they won or lost, and Godwin was able to raise 800 dollars for the Lucia Bremer and Julia Budzinski scholarship foundations.
