Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, spring athletes have been forced to deal with the loss of their season. For seniors especially, coping with this loss has been difficult, and each team is going about it in a different way.
Many of Godwin’s spring sports teams were hoping to defend their championship titles during this year’s season.
“After coming off of winning regionals last year we were very confident that we would have another great season and it was upsetting to not get that chance,” said Godwin girls lacrosse senior Annie Bartley.
“Our season being canceled was extremely unfortunate, especially since this year we had a great group of girls and looked like we had a good shot at winning states,” said Godwin girls tennis senior Emily Wirt.
Many seniors were heartbroken by not only losing their chance to defend their titles, but also losing their shot at competing in their final season.
“I would say I am most upset about not getting to wear an Eagles’ jersey and play with my teammates one last time,” said Bartley.
Softball plans to uphold a tradition that will hopefully help their seniors have closure about the unexpected end to their Godwin sports careers.
“The other seniors and I need to write our names in the dugout,” said softball senior Maggie Bowes.
The girl’s soccer team is making plans in order to honor their seniors’ time on the team.
“Once the quarantine is over, we would love to make a makeshift senior night to honor all of the seniors,” said Godwin junior girls soccer player, Chloe Borchers.
Other teams have taken a different route to cope with their lost season. As a way to help connect their team and boost morale, Bartley and the girl’s lacrosse team filmed a Tik Tok video that featured each of the players showcasing their lacrosse skills.
“I saw other teams doing it on social media and thought it could be a fun way for us to stay connected through the sport,” said Bartley.
Though the Godwin community is saddened by the cancellation of their spring sports seasons, we are glad to see our players have not lost their spirit. Until next year!
