On Feb. 6 festivities related to the Godwin vs. Freeman basketball game took place. The day started off with the winter pep rally. It was full of the usual performances of the cheerleaders, dance team, and band. There was also the usual crop of games played by each class, with the seniors coincidentally winning every one. A special event that was part of the pep rally was the crowning (or robing) of the winter senior king. Seniors voted all week for who they thought deserved the prestigious title. The finalists were Ben Atkinson, Matt Lambert, Logan Grow, Ryan Niblock, and Michael Corey. Ryan Niblock was named the winner and Mr. Molloy gave him his robe, then Janitor Thomas Threat took him on the celebratory zamboni ride around the gym.
Longtime rivals Mills Godwin and Douglas Freeman met again on Friday, Feb 6. The game began with a very slow start and by the end of the first half Godwin had only scored 6 points.
The visiting Freeman Rebels dominated the entire first half and the beginning of the second half, but late in the game Godwin came up big when it mattered.
It seemed that Freeman was in good position when they lead by 10 points in the middle of the fourth quarter, but the Eagles had other ideas.
Godwin had cut the lead to a mere three points by the last minute of the game. The game completely changed when Godwin sophomore Dillon Thomas made a three pointer from the corner.
Despite last-ditch attempts to score by both squads, the game headed to overtime.
Both teams battled their hardest, but by the end of the first overtime it looked as though all was lost for the Eagles, who were down by just three points. They only had time for one final shot before the buzzer sounded.
Enter Godwin junior Brett Buisson, who launched up a contested three-pointer only to watch it swish through the net, followed by deafening cheers from the Godwin student section.
The two rivals were evenly matched yet again in the second overtime. A three-point play from Buisson on a fast break is what tied up the game yet again, forcing a third overtime.
This time, the Eagles began to pull ahead of the fatigued Freeman Rebels. Nine made free throws helped them gain a significant lead, and the game was in the bag.
Mills Godwin won the game 67-55 over Freeman in an instant classic, and what may have been one of the most intense games the rivalry has ever seen.
