The Godwin girls’ tennis team made short work of Freeman this past Tuesday, April 2. The final score was 7-2.

Three of the six girls in the match yesterday have very little singles experience.  I was pleased with how hard the girls worked for the 7-2 victory.” Girls’ tennis coach Mark Seidenberg said.

Senior Jackie Dillon, sophomore Morgan Fuqua, freshman Anna Brodzik, junior Courtney Adams, and freshman Jessica Marks, won their games handily with Brodzik and Dillon almost shutting out their opposition.

“It was a good win, and I think we can carry our success into the postseason,” Fuqua said.

Godwin won two out of the three doubles matches. However, the success Godwin had in singles alone was enough for the victory.

“We have the chance to be a very good team.  We are inexperienced right now, but by the end of the season we should be a dangerous team in the postseason,” said Seidenberg.

Girls’ tennis move on to a record of 3-1 and have the potential to repeat their postseason success with a state championship. Their one loss came from a match earlier in the season against Deep Run.

“I expect the girls to work hard and try to get better every day.  On the court, I believe we have the talent to compete for the state championship,” said Seidenberg.

Godwin has had many injuries this season including junior Elizabeth Dudley and senior Sophie Linnell. Dudley would have been featured in the top six singles players and was a key player in doubles.

They’re next game is on Monday April 21 against Patrick Henry at 4:30 p.m.

“We need to beat Deep Run if we want to go to the postseason, it will be nice to see how well we play when we are all healthy,” Dillon said.
