1st Annual Eagles’ Eyrie Ping Pong Tournament

On Friday, October 25, the first annual Eagles’ Eyrie Doubles Ping Pong Tournament came to a conclusion with juniors Mark Lawrence and Tommy Kinnick defeating seniors David Qin and Dallas Reid in a tense final.

Lawrence and Kinnick won the D Lunch championship to reach the final while Qin and Reid won the B lunch championship to gain a berth in the final.

The tournament was organized and run by Eagles Eyrie staff members Derrick Owens, Ben Leonoff, Andre Haboush, and Dallas Reid. Godwin P.E. teacher Mark Brandenburg also played a big role in making the tournament a success. A total of 32 teams signed up for the tournament.

All ping pong matches were held in the gym. Tuesday and Wednesday were designated for the group stage matches. Teams that finished 1st or 2nd in their groups in either lunch block advanced to the playoffs while others played consolation games Thursday.

Throughout the tournament, students would watch the matches and cheer on their friends; however, the championship match was arguably the most exciting as it drew the largest crowd of the tournament.

The first annual Eagles’ Eyrie Doubles Ping Pong Tournament was a success as it raised $320 dollars and established an event that has the potential to become a Godwin tradition. The money raised will be going to the Eagles’ Eyrie Newspaper.

Running a newspaper is an expensive operation; therefore, the money will help to alleviate some of the printing costs. Godwin Senior Richard Pinchuk said, “Even though my team didn’t go very far in the tournament, I still had a lot of fun and the final was exciting to watch. Hopefully there will be another tournament this year”.

The satisfaction among tournament participants has opened up the possibility of a singles ping pong tournament in the future.
