The Selection is the first book out of five in the series. Written by Kiera Cass, the story follows a young girl in a society with a strict caste system. The heir to the throne holds a Bachelor type event so he can find a princess to marry to distract the country from class war. While the lead girl has no interest in the prince, she agrees to participate in order to bring her family out of poverty and finds herself in an unforeseen love triangle.

Wilder Girls was written by Rory Power and is a horror/ thriller novel. Three girls are stuck in quarantine at their boarding school after a scaly monster started killing the residents. When one of the girls disappears, the other two attempts to rescue her and discover the truth behind the incidents.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is a coming of age story written by Benjamin Alire. Aristotle has anger issues and Dante is a naive nerd. The two unlikeliest of friends must figure out a way to survive their high school experience and deal with racism, homophobia, and family struggles. 

The Poet X is a short poem novel written by Elizabeth Acevedo. This story is about a young girl named X that uses slam poetry in order to express herself. Confused about religion, angry at her absent father, and smothered by expectations, she uses poetry to figure out what she believes and who she is. 

Movies

Written by Christina Hudson and Sue Kroll, directed by Soon Yan, and produced by Margot Robbie, Harley herself, audiences get to see a DC heroine’s story from a female perspective. Birds of Prey follows the new single version of Harley as she tries to figure out her role and make a name for herself as a villain in a male-dominated industry.

Scoob is this year’s adaptation of Scooby-Doo, Where are You! Directed by Tony Cervone, the gang’s new mission is to stop a ‘dog-pocalypse’ and discover the beloved Scooby Doo’s past and prepare him for what the future may hold. 

While Mulan has not been released yet, be sure to keep a lookout for it as soon as theatres open back up. From animation to live-action, the story remains the same: a fierce heroine takes her father’s place in the Imperial War in order to bring honor to her family. Facing trial after trial she becomes China’s greatest warrior but without all the singing this time. 

Dolittle is an adventure movie about an English doctor with the ability to talk to animals. A young Queen Victoria becomes incredibly sick and it’s up to him and his wild friends to find a cure on the deserted island where they happen to live.

Open Season is an animated movie about a privileged bear that grew up as a pet in a small town. He accidentally and begrudgingly befriends a deer which leads him to a place he does not want to be: the woods. His only goal is to return to town and avoid all other wild animals. 

TV Shows

Criminal Minds is a drama series that has been airing since 2005. Seven elite FBI agents are on the prowl for socio and psychopaths that terrorize the United States. They assess danger, fight for their lives, all while maintaining a normal life as best as possible. 

Avatar the Last Airbender is an animated TV show about a world in the midst of a raging war. In this series, the world is split into four nations that represent the four natural elements. The Fire Nation, after destroying the Air Nomads, started a world domination crusade by terrorizing and colonizing the other nations with their fire bending; unfortunately, the only one strong enough to defeat the Fire Lord is a 12-year-old boy named Aang with the ability to control all of the elements and contact the spirit world. 

Boy Meets World is about a sixth grader growing up in the ’90s. This series is a traditional sitcom and covers day by day life for a young Cory Matthews and everyone associated with him. Watch him as he learns how to be a good friend, brother, and son in seven seasons. 

That’s So Raven follows a teenage girl named Raven Baxter as she develops psychic powers. She uses these powers to shape reality in her favor and change the fate of her two best friends and family. 

Haikyuu is a Japanese anime about volleyball. Two of the most eccentric characters find themselves on the same volleyball team after a fierce rivalry in middle school. Although their differences are great, the one thing they have in common is their determination to be the best team in Japan is enough to make them one of the most powerful duos in the volleyball league.
