Fall movie previews by Tony Detres

Continued from the October 3rd issue

By Tony Detres

Even though the summer season came and went, that does not mean the big movie releases stop.  While the fall season does not have as many high-profile releases as the summer season does, there are still quite a few big movies coming out in the next few months.  November is easily the most diverse month this fall season with movies ranging from Mockingjay Part 1, to Dumb and Dumber To.  Whether you like comedies, animations, dramas, or action movies, this upcoming movie season has you covered.

September:

The Maze Runner (September 19, 2014)

– Directed by: Wes Ball

– Starring: Dylan O’ Brien, Kaya Scodelario

– Summary: The Maze Runner is the movie adaptation from a young-adult post-apocalyptic novel by James Dashner.  The novel itself was overall well received by critics. The story revolves around a boy named Thomas as he wakes up trapped inside a massive maze. When Thomas wakes up, he has no memory of the outside world, he only seems to have strange dreams about a mysterious organization called W.C.K.D.  This movie has a really interesting premise, and does not seem like every other post-apocalyptic movie out there.  The mystery of why the maze is there and what’s keeping this group of people in there is an interesting premise that we do not see in movies everyday.  While the stars of the film are largely unknown, judging by the trailer, it seems like they are doing a competent job playing their roles.  This movie is an interesting competitor against the Hunger Games movie that comes out in November and is worth looking out for.

November:

Big Hero 6 (November 7, 2014)

– Directed by: Don Hall (Also directed Winnie The Pooh (2011))

– Starring: Maya Rudolph, James Cromwell

– Summary: Big Hero 6 is an animated film that is inspired by a series of Marvel comics.  The movie follows a boy named Hiro Hamada, his friends, and a robot he built named Baymax as they try to solve a criminal mystery. When I saw the trailer for this movie, I was immediately pulled in by its colorful world and characters. I love a good animated movie and this does not seem like it will disappoint.  Director Don Hall has a short, but sweet, history with animated movies.  Hall was behind the 2011 rendition of Winnie The Pooh, which was an incredibly pleasant surprise. What seemed like an ordinary, cutesy, kids movie, turned out to be a well written and charming animated movie that even parents could enjoy. Big Hero 6 is looking to be same way, entertaining for the kids, and charming and well written for the adults.

Interstellar (November 7, 2014)

– Directed by: Christopher Nolan (Also directed Inception, The Dark Knight Trilogy)

– Starring: Matthew Montgomery, Anne Hathaway, Matthew McConaughey

Summary:  From famous director Christopher Nolan comes Interstellar, a science fiction movie about interstellar space travel through a worm hole into another dimension. With talent like Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey, it’s almost guaranteed that this movie will be well acted.  Christopher Nolan is one of the few big-name directors that are doing original movies like this. Nolan’s last original movie, Inception, was one of the best movies I had seen in quite a while at the time of its release. Interstellar seems to be no different in being one of the more original movies to come out in the past years.
