For the first time since 2010, the Godwin girls’ soccer team defeated the Deep Run Wildcats in a 2-1 match on March 20.

To many, this came as a surprise since Deep Run is the defending AAA state champion, and was ranked number two in the nation before the game according to Student Sports.   Godwin, prior to the game, was not in the Metro Top Ten, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

“We knew that we had to come out with high intensity, and we knew we had to want the game more than them. We haven’t beaten them in five years, and we had to get that win,” said team captain and Godwin senior Audrey Mathias.

Mathias and the relatively young Eagles played solidly as they accomplished their long awaited feat.

Junior Emily Randolph scored the first goal for Godwin in the first half. The game was tied at one a piece. After the intermission, freshman Sara Puglisi scored the game winning goal.

“We had to end the game early due to an injury, but we had a private party the next day at Krispy Kreme. We were happy to start 1-0 and let Deep Run to start 0-1,” said Mathias.

Girls’ soccer head coach Ali Toole managed the team to victory, albeit the team did not have normal practice time due to inclement weather. However, she is satisfied with result of the game and hopes for continued success for the remainder of the season.

“It hopefully gave us confidence and reassurance that as long as we work hard and continue to improve we could possibly win our conference.  We expect to give ourselves the best opportunity to win the conference if we play as a team, work hard, and compete,” said Toole.

Godwin won their next game versus Henrico 6-0. Deep Run lost their next game 2-1 to Atlee and is no longer nationally ranked.
