Godwin students excel in music competitions

On March 12 and 13, high school bands from all over central Virginia came to Godwin to participate in Festival.  Festival is a band competition in which bands select songs to play in front of a board of judges.

Godwin’s own bands each scored all ones in the competition.  One is the highest score of superior. “I’m really proud of both of our bands, both fourth period and early bird, we practiced really hard and deserved this,” said senior Bethany Johnson.

Not only did the band score all ones at Festival, but the orchestra did as well for their Festival competition on March 6.

The Acapella and Madrigal groups at Godwin also went to Festival on March 21 and scored all ones.

On March 20, chorus groups Acapella and Madrigals went to Hanover High School for an invitational chorus competition. Both groups won first place in their divisions.  Acapella won first place in the Women’s Ensemble category, and Madrigals won first place in Mixed Ensemble to earn them the title of Grand Champion.

Also, on March 22 Godwin’s show choir group, Debut, won their competition at Hanover High School.

Finally, on April 3 and 4, three Godwin students will be going to All State Band and Orchestra taking place at Virginia Tech.  The three students that qualified are junior Helen Jung, junior Daniel Koontz, and freshman Benjamin Chase.
